Talk about a sermon that has helped you

I listen to sermons but most of what the priest said is promptly forgotten.

Some things have stayed with me, and this is a thread for you to write about what’s helped you from a memorable sermon.

Thank you for any replies.

I went to Mass in Scotland in the 1980s when we were on holiday. The priest first talked about parishioners he had known who said they kept a low profile - ‘Nobody at my place of work knows that I’m a Catholic!’

The preacher then said to us (or quoted): ‘If Catholicism were to be made a criminal offence, would there be enough evidence to convict you?’

I am a timid person and social interractions, let alone confrontations, cause me a great deal of stress at the time and afterwards, but I’ve tried to use this to make me a bit bolder and not to be afraid to admit that I’m a Catholic and my opinions and actions must be guided by that fact.

I mentioned this in another thread, but it happened almost ten years ago and has stayed with me, so I’ll say it here.

Our pastor said, “Some of you out there are teetering on the edge of despair. God is working on your problem and will resolve it in a way that you could never imagine.” I won’t give the details, because it involved other people, but I was teetering on the edge of despair, and God did resolve my problem in a way I never could have imagined.

I remember a priest saying in a sermon “ the democrats have this world so messed up that only God can save us” . It’s nice to hear that kind of honesty

Well, this wasn’t the actual sermon, but it’s good advice to live by, which is: Don’t waste your time on things that don’t matter. Once time passes, you’ll never get that amount of time back. So spend your time wisely.

Ever since then, I’ve made it my mission to find the truth and I have never looked back since. It’s so easy to spend our time doing things that don’t matter. But, it’s harder to spend our time doing something that gives meaning and purpose to our lives. So I devote my life to research and to discover the truth when I have time. I don’t have a wife or children, so may as well make myself useful.

That’s what has helped me.
