Hello David! I am not a Catholic. But I do have reverential feelings for Jesus. I believe that God, our eternal Father, sent Jesus to teach us, to counsel us, to tell us that the material dimension is not our real home, and that we should not look for our reward in this dimension.
I do not accept that Jesus is God. Rather he is son of God. But just as the ambassador of the president of a country must be given the respect that is due to the president, God’s ambassador should be given the respect that that is due to God. In this sense, Jesus and God are “One”. But they are two distinct persons. One is God the Father…..and the other is His intimate associate and eteranal loving servant. But we should worship Jesus as we would worship God the Father….and this will be more pleasing to God than to try to approach Him directly.
Jesus came to teach us what love of the Father is. Except through God’s intimate loving servant, we cannot understand “love of God”. This is what Jesus has come to share with us. This is the difference between the “laws” of the Judaic path of worship, and the teachings of Jesus. The Judaic path is about laws and commandments. Obedience. Jesus is predicted as coming to teach the next step: Love of God. Jesus says this to the scribes and pharasies when they ask him “What is the highest law, the highest rule?” Jesus said directly, “The highest law is to love the Lord thy God with all of thy heart, all of they strength.” This is because above all…….God wants our love.
Love of God is not about asking God for anything. If we worship God while asking for something in return……..that is a business deal…….that is not unmotivated worship, not unalloyed worship. Real love of God is, as Jesus has shown by his personal example: "Not what I want, but all am concerned about is what is pleasing to You. Not my will, but Thy will be done.”
The line of representatives coming down to us from Jesus……..what is their qualification? Their qualification is that they can share with us the same quality of love of God the Father, as Jesus can share with us. No one can become qualified to share love of God with us by receiving the votes of other men. Even if the whole world voted for someone to be the representative of God, for sharing love of God with us, that would not serve to endow such a person with the love of the Lord that Jesus wishes to share with us. The man who receives votes……he can give us encouragement by quoting scripture, by giving sermons. But only one who has this quality of love in his heart can share the taste of love of God with us.
The genuine path for achieving, for receiving love of God is the process of spiritual empathy. One must have such an intimate quality of association with God’s loving servant, that our heart becomes influenced by their nature. For a Christian, this means that one must have such an intimate association with Jesus, or the bonafide representative of Jesus, that one begins to feel his presence and imbibe the taste of his love for God. This is what Jesus meant when he said, “There is no way to the Father except through me.” It is not that by officially going through a ceremony and saying, “I accept Jesus.”, that the job is finished. Rather, that is the first step. Just as if a medical student says, “I accept John Hopkins medical school”, this does not mean that one graduates with a diploma. He has to submit himself, heart and soul, to the training. And even then he is not qualified, not authorized to do surgery. Rather, he has to become an intern in the hospital and work as an apprentice to an authorized surgeon. He has all the text book learning. But that is not sufficient. In the same way Jesus is the “journeyman” intimate associate of God. We have cultivate love of God under his guidance. Therefore Jesus says, “Accept the yoke that I wear.” What is that yoke? It is the yoke of love of God. His every thought, word and deed are invoked under that yoke. But how can we come to that orientation, that demeanor of the heart? Only be becoming an understudy, an apprentice, an intern under his guidance. And this requires the most intimate relationship that induces Jesus, or his bonafide representative, to share his feelings of love of God with us. This is the narrow path through the “straight gate” that Jesus is pointing to. So much to consider. We have to contemplate what Jesus meant when he said, “You will say that you have done this in my name, and this, and this, and this……. but when the time comes to depart from your present body, and the time of judgement arrives, I will say unto you, ‘I never knew you’.” Therefore, if we are serious about coming closer to God, we have to begin to cultivate an ardently intimate association with Him, so that we can come to understand his heart. If we really love Jesus, or his bonafide representative, he will share his love for our eternal Father……with us. This is the way, the truth. Amen.
