I recently found out that Jehovah’s Witness believe that St. Michael the Archangel is Jesus and that the LDS believe St. Michael the Archangel is Adam!
Though the Early Church Fathers (and The Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 15:45) view Jesus as a type of Adam, Catholic Christians do not believe that Jesus is Adam (nor St. Michael).
Adam is Adam. Christ Jesus is Jesus, and St. Michael the Archangel is St. Michael.
What is interesting is that both of these (respectfully) false religions have a flawed understanding of the Holy Trinity, which I think plays into their misunderstanding of who St. Michael the Archangel is.
For JW’s, they take Michael’s name, which means “Who is like God?” to mead that, because of their misunderstanding that Jesus is not God, but like God, that the name for the Archangel is referring to Jesus, whom thy misunderstand to be “like God.”
But, the Early Church Fathers understood this name, “Who is like God?” a response to the Serpent’s lies in Genesis. The Devil was trying to deceive Adam and Eve into thinking they could become like God, if they simply disobey God.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints believe in their theology that the fall of Adam & Eve was actually a good thing. They get this theology from their non-Biblical book, Pearl of Great Price (Moses 5:11), which they view as Scripture, through the prophesies of Joseph Smith (Note: Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant & Evangelical Christians do not believe Joseph Smith was a latter-day (or modern) prophet, nor that his writings are inspired).
I’m simply pointing out where they get their theology from.
In the fall of 1842, Joseph Smith claims that “Michael or Adam” visited him and he uses these names as though they are referring to the same person in a newsletter dated September 7, 1842 and later in the 128th chapter of Doctrines & Covenants (verse 21), another book considered divinely inspired by the LDS (and traditional Christians do not).
Most Christians (especially Catholics) do not believe that the fall of Adam and Eve was a good thing, but we do believe God used it to bring about a greater good through Jesus Christ! Where Adam (and Eve) were disobedient to God our Father and brought sin and death into the world, Jesus (and Mary) were obedient to God our Father and brought redemption and new life into this fallen world (Thanks be to God! : )
