The Magisterium allows for Christians to believe that this Biblical passage is an allegory or literal.
When my Wife was in RCIA, before becoming Catholic, our Priest said that he took the allegory position, but Catholic Christians must believe that there were original humans who disobeyed God and, as a result, there is original sin.
I just think it is easier to believe the literal account in the Bible, but if we later discovered that the original humans were not named Adam and Eve, it would not wreck my Faith. Same for the creation accounts.
