Does anyone know if the St. Benedict medal can be blessed by a Deacon or does it have to be by a Priest only? Thanks.
Certainly, a deacon may bless a St Benedict medal item. I’ve had many deacons bless my sacramentals. Think about it, since he may confer the Sacraments of Baptism and Matrimony, why could he not do any sort of blessing(a much smaller thing)?
According to strict Canon Law, a (permanent) Deacon may bless “medals, small crucifixes statues or pictures that will be displayed elsewhere than in a church or chapel, scapulars, rosaries, or other articles used in religious devotions” (BOB §1442).They are restricted from some sacramentals, but, sadly, many Deacons ignore such restrictions.
