This one has always bothered me. No, we do not become angels when we die.
We see it in old MAD Magazine cartoons, where one of the spies is killed and he sprouts angel wings as he ascends up to Heaven.
Then there were popular television shows like, “Touched by an Angel” and “Highway to Heaven” that depicted Angels in human form.
There is the famous “It’s a Wonderful Life” talking about how an angel gets her wings.
But, where these ideas come from, I don’t really know, but I do know that they are not in the Bible.

Not only is it not in the Bible, but it’s actually really problematic (so it’s right that you’re bothered by this). To think that we become angels is to lose sight of the fact that we are bodily creatures and that our great hope as Christians is not to live on as disembodied spirits, but rather to rise from the dead on the last day.
The only place in the Bible I can think of where Jesus likens human being to angels, is where he says that those who will rise again from the dead are like the angels in the sense that they will not be in marriages (Matthew 22:30).

No, it is not biblical. But it IS a lovely thought that can bring comfort and condolence. Thus more good than harm.
I never thought that cartoon images of people in heaven with wings meant they had turned into angels. I just thought it was a way of showing that people are different when they are in heaven.
The only place in the Bible I can think of where Jesus likens human being to angels, is where he says that those who will rise again from the dead are like the angels in the sense that they will not be in marriages (Matthew 22:30).
Peace to all,
The angels know of the coming power of flesh in Heaven.
In all generalization, The dead in the flesh, the martyrs, the saints and Old Covenant saved, all awaited in The Bosom of Abraham.
Logically, From Creation for all by the Father and through powers of the Holy Spirit Family.
Rationally, Without flesh Angels cannot atone for sin and flesh is how mankind will save the Angels, where they awaited in the Bosom of Abraham, now in Heaven through the Immaculate New Eve, Mary for The Incorruptable New Adam, Jesus in The Christ becoming again One Holy Spirit Family One God in being.
Peace always,
Stephen
