It depends. Our priests and deacons are reverent, and they don’t usually tell jokes, though sometimes they tell funny stories that are relevant to the day’s Scriptures or make quips. And one of our priests in Virginia was reverent and a sports nut and played baseball. His sermons almost always had a sports reference and we listened for it. For example, he said that some sports figure made a bad decision, just like the guy in the Gospel, and that someone in the Bible was sent to the penalty box. I liked it.
Our Priest, an amazing homilist, is also into Sports. He has an hour Sports program on our local Catholic Radio Station. For a while there he was starting his Homily off with a cheesy joke, which I did not think was necessary, and someone must have said something to him, because now he saves the cheesy jokes for right before the final Blessing. I still don’t think it is necessary, but I respect that he is willing to compromise.
