Fr. Matt also wore “rose” : ) He offered it up in Prayer for the Cleveland Browns to win yesterday.

*Checks to see if they won…

The Browns lost. :joy:

Jesus “rose” from the dead. He did not “pink” from the dead : )

At our parish in Alexandria, Va. (we now live in Pa.), one of the priests was a sports nut (also he was devout), and he would work a sports reference (into almost every sermon). He also played on the DC Padres baseball team. One time the pastor mentioned that the sports priest was in his room praying for his favorite team.

The Magnificat Advent Companion claims that the Church chose rose for the vestments on the two Sundays because roses don’t bloom all year in most climates. I had not heard this assertion before as to the reason for rose vestments and couldn’t find anything corroborating it. It might be true, but it might be an explanation made up after the fact.

I’ve never heard the theory about flowers.

Instead I have read (I think on New Liturgical Movement) that it’s meant to represent mixing of the colours of white and purple (a sign that we are having a foretaste of the joy to come, and yet are not completely there).

I know we are getting off topic here (which I’m pretty good at), but our Priest also is into Sports. He has a weekly Sports Radio Show on our local Catholic Radio Station.

Fr. Matthew is one of the greatest homilists I’ve ever experienced. He speaks to both the heart and the mind (which I think is very important).

One of our former Priests (a fan of the Jesuits) only spoke to the heart people and I often found myself rolling my eyes. He also would get creative with some of the liturgical Prayers and responses, which also bothered me. It was as if he was performing for us. Super nice guy, but I could see him wanting to wear pink every Sunday ; )

Fr. Ray, the Priest who Married my Wife and I, also spoke to both the heart and the head. His homilies, like Fr. Matt’s, had a depth to them. It wasn’t all fluff. You really had to listen to Fr. Ray’s, because he read his Homilies, but what he wrote was heartfelt and really good. Fr. Matt does not write anything down. I once e-mailed him and asked if he could send me his Homily, because it really spoke to me. He said he could not, because he doesn’t write anything down nor was it recorded.

@CanadianPriest, How do you prepare your Homilies? That would be an interesting topic.

Thanks for your humorous discussion of one of your former parish priests (and for being charitable in not naming him).

And thank you for suggestion homily preparation as a good topic. If I have the time, maybe I will start that as a new topic.
