It is satisfying when scientists are befuddled by events that call for faith, and I take pleasure in the increasing evidence for the origin of the Shroud of Turin. But I don’t accept scientific arguments against definitive doctrine; therefore, I don’t trust such proof for our beliefs. Pope St. Gregory I warned against belief that required rational proof, saying that that isn’t faith.
