I just went to the doctor for a wellness visit and it is suggested that men my age do one of these two options.
I can see pro’s and con’s to both options : )
Thoughts?
- Box
- Scope
- See results

I’m 71 and have never had the choice of pooping in a box. How soon the doctor tells me to come back for another colonoscopy depends on the results. I had my most recent one last year, and he said to come back in 5 years. I don’t think he wants a stool sample, which I’ve had to provide sometimes. He wants to get the scope inside me and look around.
My Doctor said that he has had three individuals who chose to go the Cologuard route and it came back positive and then had to go get the Colonoscopy. Two of the Three then were found to be negative. He was not trying to convince of what to do, but he wanted to inform me that the way in which insurance companies categorize it had they went with the Colonoscopy first, compared to having to do it after is different. Had they chose the Colonoscopy outright, it would have been billed as “preventative,” but because they had to get it done after testing positive with the stool sample (whether it was accurate or a false reading), it was billed as “diagnostic” I think he said. So this is why it might be good for me to go with the old school option.
However, on the flip-side, my co-worker told me that her Dad got nicked during the procedure and it caused some problems for him, which I guess you they do tell you is a risk.
Her doughter is a doctor and said that they often will have the med-students perform the procedure, so that they can learn how to do it! I hope this is not the case if I decide to go this route.
My Boss had to get it done twice, because they said he (not to get too descriptive) was not cleaned out enough the first time and he had to go home and drink the stuff again and then come back in.
On the other hand I’ll see it as starting fresh : )
I’ve got some thinking to do.
Hi, Cade. Sorry I didn’t notice your message till 11 months later! A few years ago I kept getting popup messages on my home computer from Cologuard saying something like “Hi! I see that you’re at home.”
I wrote to Cologuard asking how the company could see that I was home. Was the company hacking my computer’s camera? Tracking when I connect to the Internet? I got a reply that Cologuard cannot control its advertising.
If Cologuard were the only colon diagnostic method, I would forgo diagnosis.
I chose the colonoscopy and it was not bad at all. Being put to sleep was a strange experience. It was like someone had hit a pause button and then moved me into a different room and then hit un-pause. I thought I would wake up feeling violated, but nope. I now can see how Dr. Huxtable could get away with what he was doing back in the 80’s.
I did not receive a call saying that they found anything concerning. My yearly check-up with my Family Doctor is coming up next month, so I’m sure he got all the results.
So, anyone who is wondering, I can recommend the colonoscopy.
I’ve lost count of how many colonoscopies I’ve had. As Cade said, you go to sleep and wake up when it’s over. The prep is misery. It induces bowel movements for hours, and when it was time to leave home, I was still using the bathroom.
