Yesterday in our parish, which is usually good, there was a hymn, I think it was called “I Am Here,” that said that God is present in every warm embrace. My first reaction was to suspect that it was to prepare us for blessing of same-sex unions, but the hymn was in our Breaking Bread hymnal, so it wasn’t brand new. Anyway, when I saw that line, I closed the hymnal and put it down. Thinking about it after church, I decided that “every warm embrace” could include adultery too. Maybe the hymn’s writer didn’t intend those meanings, but I think that a plain reading of the words would include them.
