I am gonna go with this. Mostly because the subject matter is well written within these lyrics that it feels like poetry
I don’t know whether it was hip-hop or rap, but some years ago I heard a song, “Waiting for the bus in the rain.” I could relate to that song.
Probably “without me” by Eminem, but idk, there are several I like. I like a little bit of all music styles.
My father used to praise “big band” music (he was born in 1927). I dismissed it without really hearing it. Then when I lived in Boston, I went to an outdoor show by Bo Winiker and his orchestra—young guys playing “big band” music, and I liked it. Later, when I lived in Virginia, one summer I went to most of the “Music on the Steps” shows at the Fredericksburg library, with many styles of music, and I liked a lot of that. Now I’ll give almost any music a try.
I couldnt understand the words, so I turned it off. What i did see was a martial artist repeatedly kicking at an invisible opponent. And what I did feel was the voice of a man in great pain due to living in a world where he feels very little love, in a jungle made of cement, bricks, and iron. Not exactly the kind of music that says, “Thank you my dear Lord, for your kindness, for your love. Thank you for finding me in the barenness of the big city, and entering my heart that would otherwise be dry like desert sand. Thank yo my Lord, for giving me hope. Thank you.” I don’t hear this kind of gratitude in his voice. I hear kickback to a world that has made him protect himself with a mood of beligerence. Not exactly the mood of a man on his knees in the church of his heart. I hear, “If you f____ with me, you will get my foot in your face.” That’s what I feel when I hear him rap. Maybe it’s just my projection. But that’s what I feel. It’s emotionally twisted, like all that modern kind of dancing that they do today. People think it’s “cool” to contort the body like that. I think it’s an expression of despair…the dispair of the soul that is starving for love.
Here is what I was listening to back in College mostly:
- “Crossroads” by Bone Thugs~n~Harmony!
- “I Wish” by R. Kelly
- “Westside” by TQ
- “Slippin” by DMX
- “Can I Live” by Nick Cannon (probably the most Pro-Life dude on the planet ; )
- “Stan” by Eminem
- “Regulate” by Warren G
- “Best Friend” by Puff Daddy
- “I Wonder If Heaven Got A Ghetto” by Tupac
- “Gangsta’s Paradise” by Coolio
Honorable Mention: “Do Not” by John Reuben
