He was known for his hip hop music. I just think he looked cool in it!
Oh, you are talking my language. I grew up listening to gangsta rap! Though I was not a fan of Biggie, I did like Diddy, long before all the crazy stuff came out about him.
Fun Fact: Puff Daddy went to a Catholic School growing up.
The big blinged out crosses you can still find in the midway at Malls. You might also check out your local pawn shop.
I was more into West Coast Rap. Tupac, Warren G, TQ, Nate Dogg, Daz Dillinger, Ice Cube, WC, and Snoop Dogg. But, my all time favorite hip-hop group is from Cleveland. Bone Thugs ~n~ Harmony is by far my fav’.
There were some East Rappers that I liked though: DMX, Eve, Ma$e, Jay-Z, and Lauryn Hill to name a few.
I took a speech class in High School and embarrassingly did my final on the history of Hip-Hop. It was supposed to be five minutes long and I finished in two minutes, so I filled the last three minutes talking abut which rappers were beefing with whom : )
You would think I would learn my lesson, but in College, I did a speech on Bone Thugs and also felt a little foolish. Other kids were doing theirs on investing and the problems with the justice system. And I was doing mine on one of the greatest hip-hop groups of all time (in my opinion : )
Some of my favorite Christian rappers include: Japhia Life, manChild (of Mars Ill, and who became Catholic), TobyMac, Gritz, John Reuben (from Pataskala (near Columbus), Nico Santana (formerly Dy-Verse, who is also Catholic), KJ-52, Lecrae, Trip Lee, Andy Mineo.
I actually have a Facebook Page where I highlight Catholic Christian artists, if you would like to give it a follow. I started it with an online friend from San Antonio that I met in the Podcasting world biggy back in the day : )
Out of Hip Hop groups. I am mostly into Wu-Tang Clan
I think reason i like rap or hip hop. Is for the fact that it works on the logic of writing in a diary. In sense of people making up words on what is happening in their life but with rhymes.
Although apparently. Snoop Dogg had connections to Crips gang before he left them for career in Rap music which is something i didnt know. In GTA San Andreas game. They had two rivaling gangs based on Crips and Bloods (Grove Street vs Ballas) interms of fictional gangs in that game.
I could never really get into Wu-Tang. I liked ODB when he was featured on other artists’ songs. He did a couple songs with Mariah that I loved.
I know Suge Knight was a member of the Bloods. And Tupac would shout out the Bloods in some of his songs. Kurupt and Daz, however, were affiliated with the Crips. I’m pretty sure Snoop was also a Crip. I recall seeing an interview with him and he was decked out in all blue and representing the Crips. But either way, I think most of these artists were more interested in the color green (as in money, money, money : )
I think the stereotype around rap or hip hop. Is based on that it sounds like its all about “Cars, Drugs, chicks and money”. Making it feel, what you can say? Impulsive.
But i think if one understand the concept of, diary logic of, someone will sing what goes on in their life. Then its easy to remove some of that narrow minded small minded mentality around it? Since it is easy to assume it at first. And at first i was one of those guys too who thought so. Til i realized the more complex nature around it.
My Step-Dad hated rap, because they would steal songs that were already hits and then make money off of it. But, then I had to remind him that much of Rock & Roll and Pop songs were first done by black artists and re-recorded by white artists. So they steel from each other. I just though the hip-hop versions were usually better than the originals. But, that could have just been recording quality was better. In don’t know though, I now hear new artists trying to sample some of the Rap songs I grew up listening to and they are not better. Maybe I’m just getting older ![]()
I just view music as inspirations either way. As long as its not flat out plagiarism ^^
