Communion with babies

The last two services I attended, a mother has brought her baby to the alter after communion. The priest had the chalice and spoon some of the contents into the baby’s mouth. I am not familiar with this practice and would appreciate an explanation.

Don’t know about that specifically but the Orthodox church has Communion starting (for babies) right after the infants are presented in the church.

Is this an Eastern Rite Catholic Church? I know in the Eastern Orthodox Churches babies receive their First Eucharist at the same time as Baptism and Chrismation (Confirmation). These are all three Sacraments of Initiation. I speculate that the same is true of Eastern Rite Catholics.

Yes. A few years ago we saw this.

No, it is a Roman Catholic Church.

The one I saw was at an Orthodox church.
