Is the idea of a Friday crucifixion an official position of the Catholic Church?

I’m not sure what you mean by “a Friday Crucifixion”?

Is this referring to the day of which our Savior was crucified, the day commemorating Christ’s Passion, or is this more like a practice of personal crucifixion that one does every Friday?

If you are asking how we know that Christ was Crucified on Friday and the timeline doesn’t quite add up, I will point you to a few posts by Jimmy Akin:

Yes.

I’m not.

Soul,
re: “According to tradition, the Catholic Church recognizes that Jesus died at 3 pm on a Friday…”

Is this a dogma, or a doctrine or a discipline of the Church?

BTW, any thoughts on why the Messiah specifically made the point that three nights would be involved with His time in the “heart of the earth”?

I couldn’t figure out how to navigate the link. What does it say the Messiah’s reason was for making the point that 3 daytimes and 3 night times would be involved?

Did you see [my reply](https://forum.catholictalk.net/t/common-figure-of-speech-colloquial-language/2023/34) to your question about 3 days and 3 nights? I think it is what you are looking for.

As far as the point of it, Jesus _is_ the temple that would be torn down and raised up in 3 days ([John 2:19](https://bible.usccb.org/bible/john/2?19)), but the Jewish leaders did not understand what Jesus meant. They thought He was talking about the literal Jewish temple that had been under construction for forty-six years.

Check out those links I sent you in regards to how the Jewish ear would have interpreted “three days and three nights,” as they did not mean 24-hour increments as some might interpret it in our current time.

But why specifically 3 days and 3 nights?

The Messiah said several times that three days would be involved with His time in the “heart of the earth”. I’m just wondering why that wouldn’t be sufficient, so that He needed to go ahead and specify a particular number of days as well as a particular number of nights.

Mel Gibson is currently filming the sequel to “The Passion of The Christ” and it will touch on this duration of Jesus’ Passion. Perhaps it will shed some light on what you are looking for.

Correct - 3 daytimes and 3 night times. How do you get that with a Friday crucifixion/Sunday resurrection?

You’ve already posted that. And I still don’t see how it explains the lack of the third night that the Messiah said would be involved with His time in the “heart of the earth”.

There would still only be two nights - Saturday night and Sunday night.

Soul,
re: “Between the two of us, you’re the only [one] saying that Jesus was physically dead for a full three days, or seventy-two hours…”

I never said anything about 72 hours.

re: “I’m relaying that Jesus died at 3 pm in the afternoon on Friday…”

Friday afternoon, then, would be a portion of the first calendar day and a portion of the first daytime. Saturday would be all of the second calendar day, and all of the first night time, and all of the second daytime. And Sunday would be a portion of the third calendar day and all of the second night time and a portion of the third daytime, assuming that “5am Sunday” was daytime.

You can see that there are only 2 night times involved.

</div>

Soul,

The Messiah never specified that 72 hours would be involved. You’re just guessing that a day and a night has to be referring to a full 24 hours - not a minute less and not a minute more. But it’s irrelevant anyway.

Please outline how what the Messiah said in the poem changes the number of night times to be involved - from three nights to two nights.

StephenAndrew,
re: “The City of Jerusalem, Wed, Thur and Friday were His three nights in the Tomb.”

That would mean the crucifixion took place during Thursday daytime.
The Catholic Church, though, thinks it took place during Friday daytime.

Two things about your post -

In your previous post, you said that the Messiah was in the Tomb on Wednesday night, Thursday night and Friday night.

Now you’re saying He was only in the tomb for one night. Which one is correct?

I came across an interesting article online by Nick Cady on his site Theology for the People: “[Was Jesus in the Grave Three Days and Three Nights? Here’s How It Adds Up](https://nickcady.org/2017/04/17/was-jesus-in-the-grave-three-days-and-three-nights-heres-how-it-adds-up/)”

He proposes that sometimes there was a double sabbath. It is true? I don’t know, but it sounds plausible to me.

Literalman,

Your link is dealing with the argument for a Thursday crucifixion. This topic, however, is asking if the Catholic belief in a Good Friday crucifixion is an official doctrine of the Church. Perhaps you might start a new topic to discuss a Thursday one.
